A salon may seem to be a perfect place to pamper yourself with otherworldly, transcendent and serene treatment. The benefits of these treatments not only cover the medical aspects, but also the psychological aspects. Getting a nice manicure, pedicure and a haircut helps out not only in cleansing the body, but also in relieving the stress taken from everyday activities. However, there are some things one must consider even before thinking of subjecting oneself to the seemingly heavenly treatment, which mainly involves the use and maintenance of the salon's supplies and equipment.
Taking Care of Your Nails
Nail Treatment. There are a lot of things to think about before getting a manicure and pedicure. First off, you have to check if the tools being used were properly cleaned. Nippers, cutters, cuticle knives, pushers and nail files need to be cleaned after each use. The state of being “clean” isn't achieved through the use of soap and water; the metal tools must be sanitized, disinfected and sterilized. Some states require hospital-grade sanitation and for good reason. Some salons utilize UV lamps to disinfect but it may not be enough to completely annihilate the bacteria and impurities. These tools may come into contact with the skin and might possibly wound a client if a manicure is done improperly, which is why sanitation is a must. Unclean tools will most likely lead to infection, giving you complications instead of health benefits. Be also reminded to clean your hands and ask your beautician to do the same before a manicure. As for pedicures, a footbath is a must before the treatment. However, be reminded to ask your beautician to replace the water and clean it before use. If they recycle the water, refuse treatment until proper sanitation is achieved. You wouldn't want to dip your feet in a cesspool containing bacteria, dirt and other impurities washed away from other customers. Also remember this precaution when you have open wounds or cracked skin on your feet, especially on the heels. Bacteria may be able to penetrate these openings leaving you vulnerable. Also remember not to shave your legs 24 hours before getting a pedicure. Doing so would open up pores on the skin, leaving you susceptible to the dangers inside a salon. A manicure and pedicure wouldn't be complete without nail polish. First off, did you know that nail polish is a refined version of car pain and is a bit toxic? This is so due to the nitrocellulose component of the material. However, it isn't dangerous when applied to the skin and nails, although the fumes pose a threat to respiratory organs. This is why you must make sure that the salon you are visiting is well ventilated. Another point to ponder is your beautician's license. Make sure that he or she possesses a state license and is authorized to perform these tasks. Most states require beauticians to display their licenses on Lastly, as a precaution, make sure that you are not allergic to nail polish. Learn about the ingredients of this salon supply and consult your doctor.

Hair Care
Hair Treatment. Hair treatments mostly involve the routine haircut, the use of curling and flat irons, hair blowers and hair dyes and perm. First off, check the stylist's licenses and work experience. Cases about erring hair stylists and people getting hurt are pretty rare, although there are cases wherein people get their hair accidentally burnt by hair irons. The dangerous ones, however come in the form of perms and hair dyes. The contents of perms are very strong chemicals which may cause your scalp to be irritated and be in a pretty bad shape. The use of herbal perms are highly recommended as they are effective as the ones with artificial ingredients. As for hair dyes, there are cases wherein people had no idea that they were allergic to some of the dye's ingredients. Allergic reactions caused by hair dyes may lead your face swelling like a disfigured grapefruit which could last for weeks. It is always important to consult your doctor or dermatologist before undergoing this treatment.

Arming yourself with the above information may help the next time you enter the doors of the salon. Always do a check on the ingredients and check the salon supplies and equipment being used.
